EMI Shielding

Applications

One of the most promising uses of Tortech’s non-woven ULCNT mats, are as a light weight electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material. Today, shielding electromagnetic radiation is a pressing issue in many industries such as: aerospace, automotive, electronics and more; and usually done using metal based solutions. Conventional composite materials do not offer good EMI shielding capabilities.

Tortech’s ULCNT mats can be embedded in any composite structure to provide good EMI shielding performance with minimal weight. Fabricating hybrid CNT composites with Tortech’s Material does not require any special methods or equipment and can be done using conventional fabrication methods

High Frequency Attenuation (1GHz-40GHz)

In the high frequency range (1GHz-40GHz), Tortech’s CNT mats present high attenuation (>60 dB) that competes with thin aluminum foils and out-performs commercial expanded copper mesh.

Low Frequency Attenuation (100KHz-1GHz)

In the low frequency range, commercial metalized EM shielding materials were tested compared to different CNT configurations. Different CNT configurations such as CNT 11gsm, CNT oxidation 30 gsm, presented performance that competed in performance against commercial samples, while the special hybrid patented Cu-CNT system presented extremely high attenuation at a very low areal density (19 gsm).

Comparing the measured shielding attenuation to the areal density of the samples allows a consideration of the weight of material in each sample. The comparison by areal density exhibits the efficiency of the tested material and the ratio between the performance and the used weight. The best attenuation-to-areal density ratio was received for the hybrid Cu-CNT sample while still maintaining very high absolute attenuation (78 dB). Light and high performance samples are located on the upper left side of the plot, while the heavy low performance are located on the bottom right side of the plot.

Ultra High Frequency Attenuation (Up to 100GHz)

Tortech’s CNT mats were also tested for very high frequencies of up to 100GHz. In this range, the CNT mats presented extraordinary performance of above 100dB attenuation.
